(2001) de Lint has flirted with the mystery genre successfully before, with his Gypsy flavored MULENGRO and the two Samuel M. Key books ANGEL OF DARKNESS and FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM. Here he takes it all the way - with a PI as a lead character and no fantasy elements whatsoever, set in his familiar Ottawa. While slim (190 pages) the story was so engaging that I had trouble not sitting down to read the whole thing right then and there instead of dutifully writing this description. No Discount. ... $40.00 * CURSE OF ARKADY by Emily Drake - DAW HC. 11-year-old Jason Adrian has discovered he is a Magicker, gifted with special talents that he is only beginning to master. When two bullies gave Jason Adrian a bad sprain, soccer camp became another unfulfilled dream. And when his stepparents went on vacation, leaving him with Grandma McIntire, all he could do was watch. But then things began to look up. Jason found that his English teacher had sent in an essay of his and he had won a free trip to Camp Ravenwyng, a small place for kids with creativity and imagination. It was weird, but far better than staying all summer with Grandma. The trip to camp only showed how weird things were. When the bus jumped from place to place, and time seemed to be sidestepped, it was only the beginning. At camp Jason would make friends, enemies, and some out of this world memories. Because at a camp run by the Magickers, 'normal' takes the back seat and 'adventure' is the norm. ... $7.00 * THE SWORD AND THE DRAGON: TALE OF THE FIVE #1 AND #2 (of 4) by Diane Duane - Meisha Merlin Tpb.
