ROAD TO LISDOONVARNA by Charles de Lint - Subterranean HC. (2001) de Lint has flirted with the mystery genre successfully before, with his Gypsy flavored MULENGRO and the two Samuel M. Key books ANGEL OF DARKNESS and FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM. Here he takes it all the way - with a PI as a lead character and no fantasy elements whatsoever, set in his familiar Ottawa. While slim (190 pages) the story was so engaging that I had trouble not sitting down to read the whole thing right then and there instead of dutifully writing this description.
